Wagyu vs Angus: Does Price Always Mean Better?

If you've ever sat in a steakhouse, looked at the menu and found yourself staring at the Wagyu section for a little longer than expected, you're definitely not the only one.

Almost everyone has the same thought. "Is it really worth paying so much more?"

It's a fair question, especially when there's a beautifully aged Angus sitting a few lines below at a much friendlier price.

It's easy to assume that the more expensive the steak, the better it will taste. But once you start trying different cuts, you realise it isn't always that straightforward.

I've had Wagyu that completely lived up to the hype. The marbling was incredible, the beef was buttery and every bite seemed to melt away. It felt luxurious, and I understood why so many people rave about it.

I've also had Angus steaks that left a much bigger impression. The first bite had a beautiful crust, the beef flavour was rich without feeling heavy, and by the end of dinner I was already thinking about when I'd come back for another one.

Those were often the meals I remembered long after I'd forgotten how much they cost.

That's why I don't think the Wagyu versus Angus debate is really about which steak is better. It's about what you're looking for in that moment.

If you're celebrating an anniversary, a birthday or simply feel like treating yourself, Wagyu feels special.

The marbling creates a texture that's incredibly tender and rich, making every bite feel indulgent. It's an experience that's quite different from eating a traditional steak.

On the other hand, there are days when all I want is a proper steak with a stronger beef flavour and a satisfying bite. That's exactly where Angus shines.

A good Angus steak has enough marbling to stay juicy, but it still lets the natural flavour of the beef take centre stage. You get a beautiful sear, a juicy centre and the kind of steak that makes you slow down because every bite is worth enjoying.

One thing I've learnt over the years is that the name of the beef is only part of the story. The chef plays an even bigger role.

An expensive Wagyu that's overcooked loses everything that makes it special, while a perfectly cooked Angus with a deep caramelised crust and a juicy medium rare centre will easily outperform a poorly prepared premium cut.

That's probably why two people can sit at the same table, try different steaks and leave with completely different favourites. One will say the Wagyu was unforgettable. The other will still be talking about the Angus.

So the next time you're deciding between the two, don't let the price make the decision for you. Think about what you're craving instead.

If you're in the mood for something rich, buttery and indulgent, go with the Wagyu. If you're after bold beef flavour and a steak with more character, Angus is hard to beat.

Or better yet, don't choose at all.

Come with someone who's happy to share, order one Wagyu and one Angus, and spend the evening comparing both.

It's honestly the best way to discover which one suits your own taste because there isn't a right or wrong answer.

If you've been curious about Wagyu but haven't wanted to pay full price, here's a little tip. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at Black Pearl Steakhouse, you'll enjoy 50% off your second Wagyu steak.

It's the perfect excuse to order both, share a meal and finally settle the Wagyu versus Angus debate for yourself.
